More recently, the town has focused on dairy and cattle for the local economy and Burra Foods, which is a processor and exporter of dairy ingredients, is a major employer in the town.

The town has two Primary Schools, a High School, and its own Hospital. The town is self sufficient with many amenities likely to be found in suburbia but with a rural feel.

The closest significant towns are Tooradin to the north west, Warragul to the north and Leongatha to the south east.
