"You can still achieve a good result with the right strategy," Devaux said.

Devaux noted that families priced out of nearby Manly — a more established and expensive Northern Beaches suburb — are increasingly looking to Dee Why as an alternative that offers better value. He said an equivalent home in Manly would have sold for around A$10 million.

According to Australian property platform realestate.com.au (REA), the median house price in Dee Why currently stands at A$2.56 million. The suburb record remains A$9,225,000, set in 2022 for a five-bedroom home on Summit Avenue fronting an ocean reserve.

The couple had been seen inspecting properties on Sydney's Northern Beaches earlier this year. Reports indicated they were initially targeting North Curl Curl, another Northern Beaches suburb, before ultimately choosing the Dee Why property.

Clarke Gayford, a television presenter, has spoken publicly about his love of the ocean, and the couple's new home offers sweeping ocean views. The two have one young daughter, Neve.

Late last year Gayford told a media outlet that he would be looking for work but acknowledged that television was a difficult industry, and particularly a small one in New Zealand. He produced a documentary about Ardern titled Prime Minister and currently presents a programme called Fish of the Day.

Dame Jacinda Ardern served as New Zealand Prime Minister from 2017 to 2023. She became the world's youngest female head of government when she took office in 2017 and drew international recognition for introducing strict gun laws following the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings and for New Zealand's response to the Covid-19 pandemic. She stepped down as Prime Minister in early 2023, after which the couple spent time in the United States before relocating to the United Kingdom at the end of last year. The Sydney purchase marks their latest move.
